A trainedbrain workshop with Jamie Edwards

On Monday 25th February at Abbotsley Golf Hotel we held a workshop hosted by myself but taken by Jamie Edwards of Trainedbrain fame.

I introduced the workshop by describing how I became interested in psychology while on tour when it helped me to understand why I could play so well for many holes but rarely for a complete round and gave me some tools to help me improve that situation.  I later went to a conference at The Belfry where both Jamie and Carl Morris gave a talk on how being in control of your thoughts was as important as being in control of your swing and then attended a more detailed one day workshop in 2006 with Jamie.

But I wanted and needed to know more, not only to help my own game but to give me some skills I could share with the people I teach. In November 07 I spent a week in Manchester on an NLP Practitioner course held by Jamie and I can honestly say it was great and life changing for me.

I decided to try and get Jamie to come to Abbotsley to do a workshop and invited people I teach and club members of the Abbotsley and Cromwell Clubs. The workshop was entertaining, informative and opened the eyes of everyone in the room to the impacts that our conscious and unconscious thought processes have on our ability to play well. It made them question themselves on why their golf goes well on the practice ground but they find it hard to take the same performance out onto the course.

Jamie talked about how individuals fall into 4 golfing types:

Trained swing Untrained brain
Untrained swing Trained brain
Trained swing  Trained brain

We feel that most players are currently in the trained swing untrained brain group, but what we would like to be is in the trained swing and trained brain group!!

Taking control of how you feel. The truly great mind deals with whatever happens on the course

Your memory and how you store the experience called golf could be the single biggest factor in your golfing future.

Throughout the night Jamie had the people questioning themselves. He gave everyone some things to work on, both on the range, and on the course, how to think when in trouble, how to control the feeling by better breathing... the list goes on and on.

It was a great night, and I am so pleased Jamie had time to come down to Cambridge and do his thing, I know the feedback was good, so now it is up to me to take it onto the next stage.

I will be doing special sessions on the mental game throughout the year. I’ll be working with people to make sure their goals are realistic but challenging, encouraging them to keep a record of how they play and using stats charts so we can identify the weaker parts of their game and track their progress.

There will be one-to-one sessions, schools, and group coaching. I can tailor make your coaching to keep you focussed on the right path to improve your golf.
