| ALMERIMAR, Spain, 2009
26 February to 5 March
We all arrived in Spain to some winter sunshine, and headed to the hotel. In good spirits we met for the welcome drink and dinner all looking forward to the golf the next day.
We started with chipping, trying to make good contact and then working on distance control. The group then moved to the range where we started off with irons, again, a big reminder on the basics, and how important lining up is. After a bite of lunch we headed to the course where we played Texas Scramble, a great way to get to know the course and each other.
Day 2 we continued with the short game, this time working on short pitching, again working on getting good contact, then working out how far the ball would run after landing, so giving us distance control on the shots. We then did some work on the long game, looking at the posture, grip and set up.
Remembering that balance is all important, I gave the group some check points and a practice drill to work on. After lunch we played a stableford, and I played 6 holes with all of the group in a drop back format. I talked about how I saw the shot, and why I tee’d the ball up on different sides of the tee to suit the layout of the fairway and not always in the middle. Yet another good day was had by all and Rae Webster came out on top with a fab 36 points!!
After our day of rest we started with putting, using drills and exercises to improve this very important part of the game and to remind us all just how important staying still really is. We then worked on woods, getting the right ball position and the height of the tee.
Then we hit the road to play a course called Playa Serena, where everyone had a good day. Again I played with everyone in a drop back format, again helping with better course management. Top player on the day was Jane Brookwell with a great 37 points!!
Day 4 started off with a drop of rain, so we had a putting challenge in the hotel. We again worked on some other drills, and distance control, after all you can never practice your putting too much! We then hit the course, we played the new Classic course at Almerimar, a nice way to end the day, then a night out to the Chinese restaurant for a change.
As we came all too soon to our last day, the group had enjoyed a great time and a good laugh and were ready for their last bit of tuition. So we started with bunkers, and pitching, then moved over to a round up clinic, reminding them all of the drills we had covered during the week.
After a bite of lunch we hit the course, in a bit of wind that got stronger as the day went on. The whole group played well despite the wind, and top player was Jakki Slack with a great 31 points, on a calm day I am sure her score would have been in the fourties!!
The overall winner of the week was Jane Brookwell with 102 points, which was fab. The bet with Jane is to be down to 18 this time next year... a bottle of Cristal is at stake, no less!! ( I am sure she will do it too!!)
A great week with really nice people who have gone home with lots of new ideas and drills to use and goals to set, a big thank you for making my job fun!!
